Identity Theft Survey Report 2003 - Aware information taken before misuse. · Just 11% of respondents said they were aware that their personal information had been
taken before discovering they were victims of Identity Theft. · 8% of those who experienced only the misuse of existing Credit Cards and 9% of those who
experienced the misuse of existing non-Credit Card accounts were aware their information
had been taken before the misuse began. This compares to 17% of victims of “New
Accounts & Other Frauds” ID Theft. · Victims who live in the Northeast (5%) and West (9%) were least likely to say they knew
their information had been taken, while victims in the South (15%) and Midwest (14%) were
most likely to know.
