Visa says security breach hits cardholders' data

(Wed Jun 21, 2006 5:30 AM IST)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Visa USA Inc., the top U.S. Credit Card payment system, said on Tuesday that a security breach at a third-party bank teller machine processor may have exposed the data of some Visa debit card holders.

Visa said it was examining a "possible compromise" of cardholders' data which took place at a U.S.-based ATM processor.

The San Francisco-based credit and debit card brand said it had alerted the banks whose customers were involved and left it up to those banks whether cards needed to be re-issued.

No further details were immediately available about the breach or which ATM processor was responsible.
