How to build/rebuild a good credit score?

If you do not have an established credit history, or wish to improve your past credit history, there are several steps you can follow to build or improve your credit worthiness. The first step is to understand your Credit Report, and what it says about you. Inaccurate or out-of-date information can impair your ability to get credit. By regularly monitoring your credit file, you can dispute any misinformation that may be included on your Credit Report.

The best way to build credit if you do not have an established Credit Record is to start with a local credit-granting business in your area. Make sure that the company you are establishing credit through reports credit data to one of the three major credit-reporting agencies. By paying your bills on time, you are establishing a good credit file. Once you have established your credit locally, you can then apply to larger, national credit-granting companies, such as banks, Credit Card companies, etc. The important thing to keep in mind is that you should know your limits, not to over extend your financial budget by purchasing more on credit than you can afford to repay on a monthly basis.

If you cannot establish credit on your own, ask a family member to co-sign with you. Or you can obtain credit from a secured lender, one who requires a security deposit to be held in an account against the amount of credit extended to you. Either of these options can help you to establish credit in your name, if you pay your bills in a timely manner.

One way to improve your credit rating is by consolidating your credit debts. If you transfer the existing balances from several Credit Cards to just one card, and cancel the old cards, you may be able to save on the interest you pay on your credit purchases. By eliminating multiple Credit Cards, it can help your credit file from looking over-extended.

If you find that you're having trouble paying your bills, it is important to set up a plan for repayment. Contact your CREDITORs to establish a plan for you to catch up on your late payments. Set up a monthly budget, so you know where your money is going, and where you can save money to apply to your bills. It's also a good idea to cancel, or hide your Credit Cards in a safe place, until your financial situation improves and you can use them in a responsible manner again.
